Summary

Many people find test tool selection a daunting process. The market contains a variety of excellent tools in a wide range of prices. In this chapter, we covered some of the major selection criteria for performance test tools. We've discussed features such as multiple client controllers, real-time monitoring, and automatic charting. However, the most important consideration is how the tool meets the needs of your test.

Give your tool selection some forethought. Whatever tool you pick represents a significant investment to your organization. Beyond the often considerable price of the tool, your team must devote time to gain skill in using the tool and in building scripts. Pick a tool that will meet your needs as the web site continues to grow.

In Appendix C, we provide a requirements summary chart to help you organize your tool evaluation criteria. After you've narrowed your search, consider evaluating several tools in your test environment to get a better feel for their operation and the reports they produce. In the next chapter, we discuss how to build a good environment for executing your performance test.
